The Story

21st July to 1st August 2001

Staying at the White Horse Inn

St Wolfgang, near Salzburg, Austria.

This was a large family gathering, with all the Williams tribe, and attached Grains!

We flew from Manchester airport, a delight in the middle of summer, but the flights both ways were good.

Our first major expedition was to climb the Schafberg (1782m or  5829 feet). It started out as a stroll up forest tracks, but as we couldn't find the correct paths we started up the forest tracks  to the half way station. After a short whilst, Diana couldn't take the pace, but we think it was Rachel's boots that were the problem... they are much more effective when on feet rather than being carried in the rucksack.

Diana, Richard and Rachel retraced their steps and caught the train up the mountain. We walked all the way, and arrived at the summit only  a short time after.

After drinks and ice-creams, we too caught the train down!

As after most day's activities, time was spent in the pool or lake.

The next day was a more leisurely affair, with tobogganing, boating and strolling:

This was the first day of injuries! Diana couldn't tell which way to pull the break on the toboggan, and they came of in a spectacular but un-witnessed crash.

After such leisurely activities, it was necessary to ascend another mountain, the Zwoelferhorn (1520 m or 4972ft). We planned to go up by cable car, and walk down by the "road". Dad said there wasn't a road down, but we had to move out of the way of the beer lorry, who seemed to know better.

The views going up were spectacular, just ask Barbara, who had her eyes closed all the way!

The weather turned very hot for the rest of the holiday. Boats were rowed and crazy golf was played. Andrew took command on the banana boat.

On the Thursday we ventured on a 28mile cycle ride from Tiefbrunnau, through the Wiestal Valley to Hallein, then along the river Salach to Salzburg.

One one steep decent, David went over handlebars, rolled dramatically and ended up in undergrowth with scars to prove it. The helmet WAS damaged.

Another good walk was the Pilgrim's Trail, over the Falkenstein:

First we caught the ferry, then walked back to St Wolfgang.

Another good trip was to the ice caves at Dachstein.

Again this started with a cable car ride. Follow the separate link  for good pictures of inside the caves. Here are some pictures outside:

Note Barbara's preparation for coming down in the cable car!

Not to be outdone by other members of the family, David decided to try water skiing....

Impressive!

The last full day was taken with another walk from St Wolfgang to Schwarzensee ( with food and drinks en route):

Then it was time to leave, very early, when the lake was completely still......

The end.
