Barcelona 2004

Welcome to our tour of Barcelona, based upon our short break during February 2004. It is a great time to visit, just right for walking round.

Saturday 14th February 2004

10.35 a.m. flight to Barcelona from Birmingham on MyTravelLite. Took the bus from the Hotel to Placa Catalunya. Stayed at Hotel Gran Ducat, on Ronda Sant Pere.

 Pleasant afternoon walk down La Rambla to the Mirador de Colom. Ate waffles overlooking the Harbour, then walked round the Harbour and though the town to the Cathedral. 

In the evening we took a long walk to Placa Espanya to see the magic fountains and Montjuic. They were not working! Had our evening meal on La Rambla

Sunday 15th February 2004

We left the hotel at 9.30 which is very early in Barcelona. It was a good time to see architecture without traffic, and to get places before the queues.

We walked up Passeig de Gracia, seeing the main landmarks, then across to The Sagrada Familia, the Gaudi cathedral that is still being built. Barbara suffered from Vertigo!

Further walking to Parc Guell, the back via the Metro.

Evening walk round the town, seeing festival dragons!

Monday 16th February 2004

We took the train from Placa Espanya to Monserrat, the monastery on the mountain. Spectacular mountain, but otherwise a waste of time!

Tuesday 17th February

A lovely sunny day, but with a cool breeze. It was a good ay for exploring the rest of the city centre towards the sea. 

The superb Arc de Triomf was spoilt by the market in front of it!

Pleasant walk along the sea front from Port Olympic to the Post Office, where Andrew proudly purchased stamps in Spanish!

 Andrew and I went up the Mirador de Colom.

We caught the Funicular up to Parc de Montjuic, went round the castle, and the Olympic Stadium. 

On the way back we were able to go round the old cathedral, and go on the roof.

Wednesday 18th February.

Last walk down La Rambla before the flight home.
