Cornwall 2000

31st July 2000 to 10th August 2000

Powderham Castle Holiday Park

Lanlivery near Lostwithiel, Cornwall.

The site:

It was the third time we went to this site. We strongly recommend it for its quiet location, accessibility and friendliness.

Day two involved a trip to St. Michaels Mount (NT) and St Mawes Castle (EH).

Day Three. A wet windy day with a trip to the Lost Gardens of Heligan. Later on the day we had a trip to Megavissay, with a walk round the harbour.

Day 4. Thursday 3rd August.

After a long cycle to Lostwithiel to buy some milk, we awaited the Gwynn family. It must have been Nigel’s singing but it caused a lot of rain to fall, so our picnic was in the tent: all ten of us.

We got our own back later in the day when we went to Bodmin Gaol.

Never try to re-live the past. When we went to Cardingham Wood we found the adventure trail and the café were gone. Never mind – off to Fowey for fish and chips.

Day 5. Friday 4th August.

This was the long cycle day. We had a great cycle along the Camel Trail from Bodmin to Padstow, via Wadebridge. At Padstow there is a cycle lock-up which enabled us to walk round the town and along the beach and cliffs to Gun Point.

Day 6. Saturday 5th August

A hot sunny day! The first stop was the Eden project: still under construction. This is a must for a visit. Check out the web links here.

As in previous years, we also visited the Wheal Martyn China Clay discovery centre.

Day 7. Sunday 6th August.

On the beach at Daymer Bay, near Polzeath. A day for kites and sand sculptures.

Day 8. Monday 7th August.

Old haunts visited again: Charlestown, the shipwreck museum, St Austell Brewery (don’t bother) and Restomel Castle (EH).

Day 9 Tuesday 8th August.

David’s Birthday Treat! We all went go-karting. Keep clear of Barbie when she’s racing!

To calm down we had lunch and a walk at Bedruthan Steps, then took in Lanhydrock (NT).

Day 10 Wednesday 9th August.

Super walk round the Gribben Head coast path from Par to Fowey.

Evening meal out in Fowey, watching the dolphins play in the river as we ate in the restaurant.

Day 11 Thursday 11th August.

It’s all over for another year!
